Silver Maple Winner and New Review + Giveaway!

Our winner of the Silver Maple giveaway was comment #2, Syl from Live Smile Run. Congrats! Email me your info and I’ll pass it on.

Subway recently sent me a $10 gift card to try their new breakfast. Breakfast at Subway seems foreign to me. When I think of Subway I think of fat Jared who got thin, and a college part time job. Yep, that’s right. I worked at Subway one summer. I know what you’re thinking: “Where in the hell didn’t you work?” Well, I never worked at a brothel, yet.

At my Subway job I learned how to bake bread and pile subs high with veggies and condiments. One time I came in so hung-over I ate a whole loaf of bread hoping it would make me feel better. It didn’t. These were the days before fancy breads like parmesan pickle and whole grain gravy. These were the days when a club sub was totally fancy and the BMT (biggest, meatiest, tastiest – that’s what she said) ruled the roost.

The Journey

I took Sam to Subway with me because he is my experimental kid. He would eat shit on a shingle if I put it in front of him. And sometimes I do. We both got the Western Egg Muffin Melt. You can get it with the whole egg or the egg white. I went for the whole egg because I am crazy that way.

Out of  a fridge like you have in your dorm room, the sub maker pulled a yellow round thing, the shape of a pancake. It was an egg. He sliced it into quarters and put half on each of our muffins. I asked what the deal was with the egg. He said they come frozen like that. I like my eggs fresh off the griddle, so this didn’t seem so appetizing. I mentioned this to the woman behind me in line who Sam thought must have been from the Real Housewives of Orange County (something to do with the large boobs, tan and tennis skirt). She told me she comes to Subway every morning and that the sandwiches are really good, even the flattened egg part. She said they were “less buttery” than an Egg McMuffin and tasted much fresher. I trusted her. Something about the cleavage.

On top of the egg, sub dude put red onions, green peppers, ham and cheese (your choice – cheddar, provolone, American). He put it through the toaster, then offered other veggies on top.

The Real Housewife behind us got the same thing, but with an egg white. She added spinach and tomatoes to hers, which sounded tasty. She rattled off for me how many calories are in her sandwich (less than 300). That Housewife takes her calories pretty seriously. Cougars are like that.

I was feeling generous with my free gift card and bought the Housewife her breakfast. I was hoping she’d show me a fake boob, but she didn’t. She did, however, seem quite appreciative. Nothing like a free breakfast before you meet the girls at the club for martinis.

The Tasting

Sam loved his muffin melt. Would go back in a heartbeat. I thought it was pretty good. About a 6 on a scale from 1 to 10. Tasted fresh and hot, but I still had trouble getting past the flattened, previously-frozen egg. I love the fact that you can add fresh veggies and the muffin was nice and soft too. Bottom line is I would go back. For $2.00 it’s hard to beat. Also, sometimes I eat eggs and immediately need a quick visit to the latrine. Not so with this sandwich. Maybe a fart or two, but no big guns.
